Drug and Alcohol-Free Campus Notification
Wichita Area Technical College is providing the following information in compliance with the Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act of 1989, and in support of the college’s commitment to assist students and employees in engaging in safe and healthy conduct.
Prohibited conduct pertaining to illicit drugs and alcohol use by students and employees:
Wichita Area Technical College employees and students are prohibited from engaging in the unlawful manufacture, distribution, dispensing, possession, or use of illicit drugs and alcohol in conducting any College activity. The sale, possession, and consumption of alcohol or cereal malt beverages is permissible only by persons of lawful age for events and locations that are specifically approved pursuant to Wichita Area Technical College policies.
Applicable legal sanctions under federal, state, and local law for the unlawful possession or distribution of illicit drugs and alcohol:
Legal sanctions under federal, state, and local law for the unlawful possession or distribution of illicit drugs and alcohol are severe. Such sanctions include substantial fines, imprisonment, loss of driving privileges, and loss of federal financial aid. Health risks associated with alcohol and drug use:
Alcohol consumption poses several health risks including impaired judgment, impaired coordination, and impaired attention which may lead to difficulty in safely navigating one’s environment or difficulty in safely operating a motor vehicle. Unlawful drug use poses multiple health risks that can negatively impact academic, occupational, and social functioning. Drug or alcohol counseling and related programs that are available to students and employees:
Counseling and Testing Center Services also referred to as Addiction Treatment Services (ATS) are provided by Sedgwick County Comcare (940 N. Waco) and is a resource available to all employees and students for problems or suspected problems with gambling, alcohol, and/or drugs. Comcare offers a variety of services including drug assessment, treatment and testing, counseling, education programs and provides general information. Employees and students are encouraged to use these resources to assure a drug-free environment and campus. WATC’s employee assistance program provider, EMPAC, also provide alcohol and drug counseling services for employees.
Any student or employee who uses, possesses, manufactures, sells, or distributes controlled substances or alcohol in violation of law on college property or at college sponsored activities will be subject to disciplinary action, in accordance with applicable policies of Wichita Area Technical College and regulations and laws of the State of Kansas. In addition to referral for prosecution, investigation will be conducted under the direction of Human Resources or the Vice President of Student Services and the appropriate action to be taken will be determined. Appropriate action may include any of the following:
- Requirement of the employee to participate satisfactorily in a drug abuse assistance or rehabilitation program approved as such by federal, state, or local health, law enforcement, or other appropriate agency
