College Goal Sunday is a one-day, free event where high school seniors and their parents can receive professional, one-on-one help filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
“One of the first steps in going to college is to determine how to pay for it, and completing the FAFSA is the first step in that process. This year we have a total of 23 sites in Kansas so we can serve more students and families, “said Kathy Blau, College Goal Sunday Kansas Chairperson. “Attending College Goal Sunday is a great way to get free professional assistance with applying for federal financial aid. College Goal Sunday volunteers are eager to help students and their parents navigate what can sometimes be a confusing and frustrating process.”
Not only will families and students have an easier time applying for financial aid with the help offered through College Goal Sunday, four students will also win a $500 scholarship to the school of their choice (scholarship recipients must be first-semester freshman in the fall of 2011).
Before the event, students and parents should register for a PIN (personal identification number), which is required for the electronic filing of the FAFSA, at www.pin.ed.gov. Those attending should plan to spend 45 minutes to an hour meeting with financial aid professionals. They should bring their 2010 income tax returns and/ or 2010 W-2 forms, or their 2010 year-end pay stubs with 2009 tax returns. Families who have not completed their 2010 income tax forms can still learn valuable information to help them finish filling out the FAFSA at home.
College Goal Sunday is being held this Sunday, February 13. It is a come and go event held between 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm at WATC’s National Center for Aviation Training campus located at 4004 N. Webb Rd., Wichita.
Students can sign up for a text message reminder by texting “CGS” to 25827.
