WATC boosts student's mobile devices

When Wichita Area Technical College (WATC) students return to campus this semester, they will notice a new, free convenience. Mobile charging stations have been added to the commons in each of WATC’s three campuses.

“The IT Department has received requests from students and visitors nearly every day about a way to charge their phone batteries. I saw a presentation at an IT conference about how KU solved this problem and thought their solution would be a good fit for us as well,” said Randy Roebuck, Executive Director of Technology and Institutional Effectiveness at WATC.

Today’s students rely heavily on their mobile tech devices to get them through the day. Whether it’s for homework and online classes or Facebook and SnapChat, cell phones and tablets are important to student success (and entertainment).

“Our students will benefit most from these charging stations and especially students who come to WATC directly from work and don’t have time to charge their cell phones. Many of these students are juggling work and family responsibilities, so helping them stay connected gives them peace of mind and allows them to focus on their classes,” said Roebuck.

Each charging station has eight ports; one for Android devices, Blackberry and new and original chargers for iPhone, iPad and iPod. The goal is to encourage using tech devices and making them more accessible to students by offering a convenient power boost.
