WATC Promotes Benefits of Technical Education at High School Counselor Day

37 Wichita area instructors and counselors attended WATC’s annual High School Counselor and Instructor Day on March 18 at NCAT. The primary purpose of this event is to network with people who share the goal of preparing students for their future.

“The high school counselors and instructors are an important link to students and it’s exciting to work together with them to help students’ prepare for their future,” said Pam Doyle, Dean of Enrollment. “We strive to improve pathways for high school students and we want to promote the benefits of technical education.”

This year the event was held at the National Center for Aviation Training campus to help acquaint the high school staff with the new facility and programs offered at WATC. Several WATC staff spoke to the group.

College President Dr. Tony Kinkel spoke about the changing demand for technical education. He shared statistics that showed the unemployment rates for those with no high school diploma at 16.5%; for those with a high school diploma at 10%; for those with an Associate’s degree 8.5% and for those with a bachelors degree at 4.5%. He applauded the work that public schools do to prepare students for careers.

Sheree Utash demonstrated the ITL instructional system which is a dynamic, graphical interface allowing the student to actually experience the technical skills online. She also outlined concurrent programs available – where high school juniors and seniors can begin college programs while still in high school. They include Aviation Maintenance Technology, MachiningCompositesWelding and CATIA.

Pam Doyle shared scholarship opportunities, which include the High School Class of 2011 scholarship,  Certificate of Completion Scholarship , Spirit AeroSystems Aviation Scholarship and new scholarships for part time students, and others sponsored by Snap-on and Air Bus.

Laura Fowler gave an overview of WATC academic programs of study and upcoming events. Jessica Ohman explained Student Support Services. Laura Barker shared information about Career Services.
