WATC hosted 250+ high school students for USD 259 Career and Technical Education Day

Tuesday, April 16, Wichita Area Technical College (WATC) hosted its third campus tour event for the USD 259 Career and Technical Education (CTE) Day. More than 250 students from Wichita high schools including Northwest, North, South, Southeast, Northeast Magnet, West and Heights participated.

CTE Day is an opportunity for students to explore career and technical education programs. WATC’s main campus, the National Center for Aviation Training (NCAT) is an ideal destination for such exploration.

Students were on campus from 9am – 1pm and thanks to WATC volunteers, faculty and staff, they were able to experience what WATC has to offer.

Tour groups were welcomed in to the labs and classrooms for welding, machining, nursing, manufacturing and more. Faculty and instructors visited with the students about the programs.

In addition to the facility tour, students heard from WATC staff members Joe Ontjes, Laura Fowler, Annie Amstutz, Andy McFayden, Katie Garrett and President Dr. Tony Kinkel. Students learned about the options WATC offers, played a trivia game and enjoyed a hamburger lunch.

This opportunity to introduce alternative option for college and training is accompanied by Senate Bill 155, which waives tuition for juniors and seniors to begin career and technical education during high school. For those about to graduate, they can receive free textbooks for summer gen ed courses.

Diann Faflick, USD 259 CTE Facilitator, worked hard to coordinate the event along with WATC Director of Marketing and Recruiting, Andy McFayden.

The event was a huge success as one student commented, “I’ve been to every CTE Day, but this was definitely the best.”

WATC opens its campus and facilities to various groups, schools and individuals for tours or events. It takes a lot of work behind the scenes to make each one impactful and successful and it doesn’t go unrecognized.

“It takes a lot of staffing power to make an event like this a success.  Words cannot express how appreciative I am for the support that everyone puts forth to make all of the events that we have throughout the year successful,” McFayden said.
