WATC Gets Technical at Youth Aviation Camp

Youth Invited to Tour WATC Airport Campus on Aug. 3

WICHITA- When you ask most kids what they want to be when they grow up, you’ll most likely get a “textbook” answer (teacher, lawyer, rock star). Your chances of hearing “A&P licensed mechanic” are pretty slim—unless that particular young person is attending Air Capital Aviation Adventure Summer Camp Aug. 2 through 7, hosted by Exploration Place.

Wichita Area Technical College (WATC) has invited these future engineers, air traffic controllers and A&P mechanics to tour the WATC Airport Campus at 2021 S. Eisenhower from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 3. Here, camp attendees will participate in hands-on activities in aviation maintenance technology and ask questions of instructors to learn about all of the career options available in this field.

“All too often, school counselors place emphasis on standard ‘college’ tracks,” said Noel Gary, director of aviation maintenance, WATC. “They don’t expose them to careers in aero-structure, composites, sheet metal, A&P, turbine engines, and environmental programs. These are high-paying, high-demand jobs, and we’re eager to show today’s youth these great alternatives.”

The Air Capital Aviation Adventure Summer Camp is for students entering grades 7-10 and will take place Monday, Aug. 2 – through Friday, Aug. 6 from 8:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. at Exploration Place, 300 N. McLean Blvd., and various locations throughout Wichita.

During this first-ever Exploration Place aviation summer camp, students will:

  • Examine the history of flight and aviation in the Wichita area.
  • Investigate the principles, mechanics and engineering of flight.
  • Discover the many careers available in the aerospace industry.
  • Experience flight preparations and simulators.
  • Visit Wichita locations focusing on the past, present and future of aviation.
  • Log up to one hour of flight time with a certified flight instructor.

Other participants include: Cessna Aircraft Company; Yingling Aviation/Kansas Aviation, Inc.; Bombardier Aerospace; Hawker Beechcraft; Midwest Corporate Aviation; Stearman Field and Wichita Aero Club. The camp is supported by the Federal Aviation Administration.
