Kathy Adkins Receives Distinguished Nursing Alumnus Award

Kathy Adkins, WATC Practical Nurse Clinical Program Coordinator, was awarded the Distinguished Nursing Alumnus Award on Thursday May 12 at the Nursing Alumni Society’s Annual Meeting.

The recipient for this award is someone who has made an outstanding contribution to the nursing community in the Wichita area. Nominations are made to area nurse educators from all over Kansas and the Board of the WSU Nurse Alumni chooses the final recipient.

“We are very proud of this distinguished acheivement that Kathy has received,” said Sheree Utash, Senior Vice President, Academic Affairs/Learner Services.  “She is a consummate professional nurse and educator who is committed to our students and our nursing department to exemplfy a high level of excellence both in and out of the classroom.”

As a life long learner, Kathy earned BSN and MHS degrees from W.S.U., and is currently working on her second Master’s degree, “this time in Nursing,” she said. She is also a Certified Legal Nurse Consultant, has worked at Wesley Medical Center throughout her 30-year career, and has taught ACLS and CPR for a number of years. She was also certified as a “CCRN”.

“I am so astounded to be included in the company of people like Dr. Betty Sullivan, Dr. Jan Riordan, Dr. Francine Nichols and two of my favorite former nursing instructors, Dr. Carla Lee and Arnetha Martin,” said Kathy.

Kathy’s goal is to see WATC’s nursing program grow into the most honored LPN program in Kansas and produce only the very best nursing, most of whom will go on to get their RN degrees. She also works with area Simulation Center experts to assist Wichita in developing a premier facility for students of all programs to better learn real life situations in health care

Kathy also stays busy as a Nationally Certified Obedience Instructor, where she  certifies service dogs and therapy dogs for USD 259. She has also been teaching people of all ages how to win showing Quarter Horses in All AQHA events.

“Working with people comes by habit of seeing what does and doesn’t work over the years,” she said.
