Program Features
The Practical Nurse program provides the common body of knowledge and skills essential for the practical nurse’s entry into practice. The curriculum fulfills the educational requirements for licensure as a licensed practical nurse (LPN). Upon completion of the program, graduates are eligible to take the NCLEX-PN examination. Curriculum and schedule are subject to change based on clinical availability. Students may request consideration for advanced placement by submitting an official transcript of coursework. This program does not offer credit for experiential learning. There are pathways for articulation to degree nursing programs. Students continuing their education for an ADN or BSN should consult a counselor regarding transfer of credit for all courses.
Admission Requirements
In addition to the college’s admissions policy, students must:
- Submit an application for admission.
- Meet additional requirements located on Practical Nurse Admission Checklist.

Request official college transcripts (if transferring coursework).
- College transcripts: Request official transcripts be sent from each institution from which coursework is to be transferred.
- Transcripts must be from accredited institutions and only coursework with a grade of 2.0 or higher will be accepted.
- Any credits earned more than five years previously will have to be approved by the division dean.
- Admissions personnel will work with the program chair for approval. See WATC’s Transfer of Credit policy in the catalog for additional information.
- Official transcripts must be mailed directly from the issuing institution and received by the Registrar prior to registration.
- Official transcripts must be in a sealed envelope upon receipt and may not be hand-carried or stamped “student copy.”

Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
- The FAFSA is available at all WATC centers or file online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. For assistance in completing the FAFSA, call or visit Financial Aid, WATC Main Campus.
- WATC’s code for the FAFSA is 005498.
Complete the TEAS ® test Version 5 or submit verification of composite score. Exam results must be sent to WATC Testing Center by ATI, the testing company. http://atitesting.com
- Assessments are available through Testing Services at NCAT and the Southside Center.
- A photo ID is required to take the assessments. Results are valid for five years. Results are not given over the phone.
- Assessments are $40 per test session.
Health Core (must be completed before acceptance
Applicants must submit a copy of their current KDHE CNA certificate to Admission
- Applicants must submit a copy of an American Heart Association’s CPR for Health Care Providers
- General Psychology, Anatomy and Physiology*, Principles of Nutrition*, Developmental Psychology, and Computer Applications* are required prior to entering the program.
- Biology Review or a Life Science class (within the last five years) is a prerequisite for Anatomy and Physiology.
- *Classes must be no older than 5 years at the time of acceptance

- Applicants must attend a Practical Nurse information session — late arrivals are not admitted.
- WATC is not able to accommodate children, so please make other arrangements for child care.
- There is no fee to attend however registration is required at the following link: http://watclpn.eventbrite.com/
- Bring a notebook or pocket folder and writing implement (pen or pencil) to the Information Session
- Submit two letters of recommendation
- Forms will be provided to students who attend the Information session.
- Criminal Background Check*: Applicants must pay for and pass a criminal background check.
- Drug Screen: Applicants must pay for and pass a drug screen.
- Health Examinations and Immunizations: complete all required health examinations and immunizations at their own expense by designated date.
- Stand-by applicants are accepted into the program up to and including the second day of classes.
- A letter is sent to applicants who are placed on stand-by status.
- If selected from the stand-by status, you will be contacted by telephone.
- It is essential for students on stand-by status to have all financial aid, physical information, background check and drug screening completed, as this could be a determining factor for getting into the program on short notice.
- Test scores and transcripts are filed with the registrar, WATC Main Campus.
- Applicants must attend another information session to re-apply for the next PN program start.

* As required by WATC policy, any felony and/or crimes against a person preclude admission to health programs.
These additional requirements must be received by WATC before the deadline specified in the acceptance packet.
Acceptance
When all above requirements are met, applicants are eligible for selection. Students are selected based on merit including but not limited to, grades from pre-requisites, TEAS test scores, letters of recommendation and personal interview. Interviews will be scheduled prior to the selection process.
Upon acceptance into the Practical Nurse program, applicants must complete the following requirements to secure a spot in the program:
Stand-By Status
Some students may be selected for stand-by status. This means an applicant may be accepted into the program when someone declines to attend or does not meet required deadlines.
Resubmitting Application
Applicants who are not accepted into a specific program are notified and must complete an Information Update.
Note: The Kansas State Board of Nursing may deny licensure to persons who have been guilty of a misdemeanor involving an illegal drug offense unless the applicant or licensee establishes sufficient rehabilitation to warrant the public trust (KSA 65-1120), except that notwithstanding KSA 74-120 no license, certificate of qualification or authorization to practice nursing as a licensed professional nurse, as a licensed practical nurse, as an advanced registered nurse practitioner or registered nurse anesthetist shall be granted to a person with a felony conviction for a crime against persons as specified in article 34 of chapter 21 of the Kansas Statutes Annotated and

The program consists of 48 credit hours and costs approximately *$6,723.00.
