This month, we would like to shine WATC’s Online Learning Spotlight on instructor Travis Krehbiel. Travis teaches Principles of Nutrition fully online. Travis is full-time faculty teaching Biology and Microbiology for WATC. In previous semesters, Travis also taught biology classes as hybrid classes.
Travis earned his Master’s degree at WSU in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in science education and his Bachelor’s degree is from Bethel College. Travis holds a current Kansas Professional Teaching License. Travis brings this broad science background to the Nutrition classes he teaches. This is Travis’ first fully online course as instructor.
Travis’ online Nutrition class is an outstanding example of comprehensive, creative online teaching in a subject which is important in the development of our health care professionals who complete programs at WATC as well as life skills for all students who take the course. It is rich with information that has a practical application to everyone’s lives. The course also provides opportunities to develop critical thinking skills as daily food choices and current nutritional issues are analyzed in their total effect to the body.
Travis has developed online YouTube lectures utilizing Camtasia software for each chapter of his online course. In these lectures, the students actually hear his lecture as he presents it utilizing PowerPoint slides that the students can see on their computer screens just as he would in a traditional classroom. This enables his course to have a strong instructor presence. He has developed each video lecture to explain the sometimes complex topics in his Nutrition course. The students can actually hear their instructor explain the concept on their computer as they see the accompanying slide. This allows the students to relate more to the instructor and material in the online environment. His online course is well-organized and the content area is rich with numerous learning activities which support all types of learners. Travis has gone the extra mile in developing a full course in Principles of Nutrition in which the students can feel as though they were actually sitting in his class.
Hats off to Travis Krehbiel for his great work in designing an outstanding online Principles of Nutrition course which has abundant opportunities for students to connect with their instructor and other classmates while learning about Principles of Nutrition which may apply to their professional situations as well as developing critical thinking skills to formulate their own personal nutritional choices.
