WATC becomes first technical college to sign a 2+2 transfer agreement with Newman University; scholarships available for WATC students to complete general business degree

WICHITA, Kan. — Officials from Newman University and Wichita Area Technical College signed an agreement April 21, 2014 that allows students who complete an associate of applied science degree at WATC to transfer to Newman University as juniors in Newman’s General Business bachelor’s degree program.

The 2+2 agreement between the faculty at Newman and WATC means that specific WATC courses will be accepted as equivalent to Newman courses, leaving WATC graduates only an additional 62 credit hours to complete a General Business degree.

“While Newman has made similar agreements with community colleges across the state, this is the first agreement of its kind between Newman and a two-year technical college,” said Newman Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Michael Austin, Ph.D.

“Newman University welcomes the opportunity to work with Kansas two-year colleges to aid in the smooth and efficient transfer of credit hours,” Austin said. “This agreement is designed to provide a seamless transition for WATC graduates who want to further their goals in a four-year institution.”

“We appreciate the opportunity to partner with Newman University to give students a quality and affordable pathway to a bachelor’s degree in General Business.  We are proud to be the first technical college to enter into a 2+2 agreement with Newman and look forward to working together to help students achieve their career goals,” said Pam Doyle, WATC Dean of General Education.

The 2 + 2 agreement allows WATC students who complete their degree to transfer to Newman University as juniors with all general education requirements met, with the exception of the six hours of philosophy and theology required of all Newman students. WATC students can complete their 62 credits from WATC and only have 62 credits to complete at Newman, which includes 40 upper division hours. This means students will be able to enroll in WATC courses knowing that they will be accepted as equivalent courses when they transfer their credits to Newman.

Wichita Area Technical College students will also receive a new scholarship. Students transferring to Newman as part of the 2+2 agreement with a 2.0 or higher GPA can earn a $3,000 per year scholarship, which is renewable each academic year so long as the student meets all academic requirements and will be considered for other Newman-based grants.

Newman already offers a $1,500 scholarship per year, renewable for a second year, to any student who completes an associate of applied science at a two-year college in Kansas and surrounding states. Transfer students are also eligible for other Newman scholarships. If combined, up to $12,500 in scholarship funds creates what could be one of the largest transfer student scholarship packages in Kansas, allowing students to attend Newman for as little and in some cases less cost than a public institution.
