WATC is nationally recognized as a “Manufacturers Endorsed” institution

by kgarrett on May 29, 2013

Thursday, May 23, Wichita Area Technical College (WATC) was announced as a charter member of the Manufacturing Institute’s M-List.

The M-List represents national institutions that have been recognized as “Manufacturers Endorsed.” WATC is the only Kansas member of 39 institutions in 16 different states.

These institutions include technical colleges, community colleges, high schools and four-year colleges and universities that deliver high-quality manufacturing training programs.

WATC’s manufacturing programs include welding, manual and CNC machining, automotive service and collision repair, electromechanical systems and robotics.

“We are excited about this announcement and promoting WATC’s outstanding manufacturing programs,” said Melanie Stover, Program Manager, The Manufacturing Institute.

The measure of quality is set by the manufacturing industry, in that schools on the M-List have technical programs that align to industry certifications in areas such as production, welding and machining.

The M-List is both a marker of excellence and a commitment to a cause. It was launched to recognize outstanding manufacturing education and training programs and to guide additional schools in developing rigorous and relevant technical education pathways.

The M-List benefits manufacturers, skilled workers, students and career changers looking to upgrade their skills and site selection agents looking for a region with a commitment to manufacturing skills.

According to the Manufacturing Institute:

  • 82% of manufacturers report a moderate or serious shortage in skilled production workers.
  • 75% of manufacturers say the skill shortage has negatively impacted their ability to expand.
  • 600,000 jobs in manufacturing are unfilled today because employers can’t find workers with the right skills.

There is a major gap to fill in manufacturing, so WATC’s programs are supported by Industry Advocate Teams. Made up of individuals outside the education professions with extensive experience in their fields, these teams represent industry needs and provide advice for the direction of WATC’s programs.

Industry Advocate Teams in manufacturing include: The Coleman Company, Inc., Haas Factory Outlet, Spirit AeroSystems, Chance Rides Manufacturing, Inc., Lampton Welding and more. For the complete list, click here.

WATC partners with the Workforce Alliance of South Central Kansas to provide training opportunities for unemployed individuals. Upon completion, many programs guarantee job interviews with local companies.

In April, WATC provided $1,000 scholarships to selected applicants through the Wichita Manufacturer’s Association.

WATC offers more than 75 programs of study and has a 97 percent placement success rate. To become a student at the only Manufacturers Endorsed institution in Kansas, apply now.
