Emily Compton, President and CEO of Goodwill Industries of Kansas, Inc. and Dr. Tony Kinkel, President of Wichita Area Technical College announced today that effective July 1, 2011, there will be a new collaboration between the two organizations to expand Adult Education opportunities. This Adult Basic Education Center will combine the expertise of both programs in the adult learning area. It will continue to offer ESL (English as a Second Language) programs as well as programs geared towards attaining a Kansas High School diploma through the GED testing program. GED preparation will be offered in three ways to accommodate the needs of different adult learners:
- Structured Class work as currently offered by WATC
- Flexible / self-paced learning as currently offered by Goodwill
- A new GED prep program via online study
The new collaboration is expected to double the number of adults that can be served by the existing programs. It will also offer transitional counseling and financial assistance to move graduates of the GED programs to post-secondary certificate programs and other higher educational opportunities.
Students will be able to enroll at either Goodwill or WATC. A minimal fee for materials and assessments will be charged to students, but tutors and access to any of the programs will have no additional fees attached.
More information about the program can be obtained by calling Goodwill (316-267-1155) or Wichita Area Technical College (316-677-1150).
