Nearly 400 students attend orientation

by amcfayden on August 11, 2010

This promises to be a banner year for WATC with record enrollment, the opening of NCAT, and many programs already filled to capacity. It is no wonder, then, that more students than ever will attend New Student Orientation this week. Nearly 400 students are scheduled for the four orientation sessions that began on Tuesday. Orientation provides new students valuable information to help ensure a good experience right from the start. The goal is to provide students an opportunity to connect with their peers as well as to make them aware of resources available to help them succeed. Orientation not only helps to ease anxiety for new students, but it helps students navigate the education process and try to ensure a good experience from the beginning.

“We are so excited to meet all the new students who will be beginning a new academic year with us. Attending orientation is a student’s first step to success when they begin college”, Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs and Learner Services Sheree Utash.

Sheree, along with President Ray Frederick provided welcome messages along with tips for student success. They want to make sure students understand that we are here to help them; their journey does not end with their last class; we can even help them with their career search.

Coordinator of Enrollment/Activities Laura Fowler provided information on how to add/drop classses, FERPA and other policies. She encouraged SKILLS USA participation and spoke about previous success students have had in competitions. Students enrolled in technical programs (most of our aviation and manufacturing programs) are automatically a SKILLS USA member. Laura concluded by stressing to students that advisors are their initial point of contact for enrollment issues and other concerns.

Coordinator of Career Services Laura Barker spoke about WATCs online job and resume board, building resumes and interview tips. WATCs student success rate of 80.3% shows that we are dedicated to student career services. Laura also spoke about library, tutoring servcies, the testing center and encouraged students to use these tools to help them succeed. Laura also encouraged students to join the Career Services group on LinkedIn.

Director of Integrated Media Mia Lee invited students to connect with WATC on a variety of platforms including the website, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and LinkedIn.

Guest speaker Richard Coldwell,  Snap-on Industrial Account Executive  presented the Student Excellence Program (SEP). Any WATC student may purchase tools at a reduced rate, up to 50% in some cases. Certain restrictions apply.

Orientation sessions were held on Tuesday, August 10 at the Southside Center. Students may also attend sessions on Thursday, August 12 at 9:00 am at the Southside Center, or 6:00 pm at NCAT.
